Interview with Emily Sarsfield

Snowsport GB: How long have you been skiing?
Emily Sarsfield: I started when I was 3, so 21 years now.

What is your preferred discipline?
Ski Cross

What are your skiing aspirations?
Vancouver 2010 Olympics

What have been your best of times in the sport?
Competing in some of the most prestigious races in the world, travelling and meeting some really inspirational people. And of course, that feeling you get after a fast run.

What have been your worst of times in the sport?
The freezing cold days trying to ski when you can't even feel your toes!

Where is your favourite place to ski?
Meribel, hence the reason I'm based there.

What would be your advice to young ski cross skiers?
Do as much all round skiing as you can, Ski Cross requires a strong all round skier. Be confident, give it your all...and check out my website for Ski Cross camps in the future!

What has been your biggest challenge to date?
World Cup, Les Contamines 2005...The course had a large gap jump where you had to take off on the first roller, clear the 20/30 foot gap and land on the downside of the 2nd roller. In training I managed to take off on the first roller but didn't clear the gap therefore landing on the upside of second roller...resulting in me somersaulting spectacularly over the feature, causing whip lash and many other injuries. I immediately got up shuck myself down and went to the top of the mountain again. The 5 minutes I spent on the chairlift returning to the top were the biggest challenge I have yet faced in Ski Cross...as I had to decide weather I could do it or not...I went straight to the top not being able to move my neck and attempted the course again...successfully completing it. Psychologically that was the biggest challenge to date and i learnt a lot from the experience.

What do you hope to achieve this season?
This season I hope to regularly make the World Cup finals.

Is there anything you do before the race?
From when I wake up I have a pattern I have to stick to...from putting my right sock on first, to my right ski before I race!

What are your other favourite sports?
Anything and everything...I play a lot of netball in the summer. Anything active and competitive I love!

What do you do to relax?
I'm not very good at relaxing, I can't sit still long enough! However any spare time I get I love to shop...I'm a girl, it's in my blood!

If you had a superpower what would it be?
Hard one...it would probably have to be the ability to get to a location when I clicked my fingers. So I didn't have to spend hours driving to comps in my little car all alone.

What is your nickname?
Em, Mini Sars or Sars (after my surname...not the disease!)

If you were not a ski racer what would you be doing?
Probably another sport as I love to compete and train. Or my summer job full time as a Sports Development Officer.

Who is your secret crush?
Chris Moyles but don't tell Martin!

What’s on your ipod?
I never been into music...so don't have an ipod.

What is your favourite food?
Pierre Chaud (Hot plate)

Can you tell us something no-body else knows about you?
I insist still at 24 to eat breakfast/desserts with a little spoon...drives everyone mad!

What song is most likely to make you move on the dance floor?
Jackson 5 - Blame it on the Boogie

What can you be heard saying most often e.g. your favourite catchphrase/motto?
I don't say it much...but a motto I live life by is "Reach for the moon and even if you miss you'll always land amongst the stars"
